So Joseph responded to a button graphic design ad on Guru & we liked his work, so we hired him to do 4 buttons.
We agreed upon a price.
Then I asked him to do a logo, he quoted my assistant $40, & I said fine.
Joseph had problems following instructions.
I told him a few times that I am not to be bothered, & that my assistant is now his supervisor.
Finally after bothering me 4 times, he stopped.
Then he started asking me numerous times if we had work, & how much work we’d have.
I hate it when independent contractors do that, it not only makes them sound desperate, it shows they can’t concentrate on what’s going on in the moment & they always have to worry about the future.
Despite him asking me, & then asking Andy my assistant, I decided to give him additional work.
He was sent all the documents that he needed to read over & sign, plus the NDA. We couldn’t move forward with any work until those documents were signed.
After all of his constant asking about work, he started to silently refuse to sign the documentation. Something that takes the average independent contractor 1 day to get back to us, a week+ later we still hadn’t received it.
My assistant asked him to make some changes to the logo because I couldn’t read the tagline clearly.
My assistant said that Joseph wasn’t changing things, nor did he give us the PSD which is something we require from everyone.
The next thing I know, Joseph is e-mailng me, e-mailing my assistant & invoicing us not only without having completed the logo, BUT, he hadn’t even sent us an timesheet or work order.
Then he has the nerve to tell my assistant that they should have charged us $200. This is when I really started to get angry. I refused to pay the invoice, & Joseph refused to make the changes.
A few days later him & my assistant started having arguments.
It was clear Joseph had no intentions of doing any other work for us, & instead of being man enough to state so, he just continued to harass my assistant & play games.
Finally when I got a “reminder” from Guru to pay the invoice because Joseph must have asked for that, I got very very upset.
How dare he demand money when the work wasn’t done.
I even told my assistant to tell him that if he wants to get paid for the 4 buttons, I can pay him for that.
Now I wrote him an e-mail telling him to STOP harassing us, that he is unprofessional, his behaviour is erratic, & we don’t pay for work that isn’t done.
He removed the invoice from Guru, but I feel everyone needs to know what you are up against.
Also my assistant stated that he thinks he wasn’t even communicating with the same person most of the time because he could tell when the English was better or worse.
These Indian design companies play this game lying about who is really talking, & I don’t like that one bit.
This was a mistake hiring East Indians.
I’ve had nothing but problems with them in the past, & here’s another indication that they don’t communicate well which is 50% of what a healthy relationship is all about. It doesn’t matter if their work is good if their behaviour is erratic, harassing, & when they are asked to finish off work they just ignore the request.
