So I put an ad out looking for some computer help, someone who knows both software & hardware. This was for my personal computer.
The next thing I know, I get this Marty guy who starts accusing me of trying to get free information him which was a joke. If I wanted to do that, I’d just go to a message board.
This all started because I was trying to screen him. I asked him which virus protection program & other programs he uses hoping he’d give me some names of Virus & Spyware/Adware programs that are used by real geeks, none of this mainstream stuff because people don’t know the first thing about computers.
He starts asking me what this has to do with him fixing computers.
Unfortunately it turned into a total flame fest because Marty clearly thinks the entire world is out to get something free from him, & in my opinion he has trust issues. I don’t deal with people who live in fear & constantly think everyone is a nasty person, I don’t care if one comes to him by way of the Internet. If he can’t handle doing business online, he shouldn’t be on the Internet doing business.
Marty also felt I should tell him exactly what I am doing. I don’t have to tell him I’m screening him, that defeats the purpose in my opinion.
I had an ad out, I had already discussed his prices, it should have been very clear that I was a serious client. It wasn’t like I was spending tons of hours talking to him, I asked him 2 questions.
Anyway, he called me unprofessional, an amateur, & in the end he was nasty to me. Yes I mocked him back because it was so clear he had serious emotional issues, but I was in deep shock as to how I was being treated. I NEVER treat potential clients this way, I always answer their one or two questions when they ask. That’s called servicing potential clients because you want their business.
Then he starts mocking my e-mail address which he doesn’t know the first thing about. He said…
“Toll free numbers and voicemail? Like I want a telemarketing job.”
Thank god he showed his true colours before I wasted time giving him my hard earned money, & he charges a lot more than other techies I’ve hired in the past.
